Understanding the Causes and Symptoms of Gum Disease

dca-blog_gum-disease

Gum disease is an extremely common dental problem that is almost universally preventable. The first stage, called gingivitis, is a mild inflammation and infection at the base of your gum line. Gingivitis is often reversible with proper care. If untreated, the infection spreads and weakens the supportive tissues and jawbone. Advanced stages lead to more obvious symptoms and serious consequences like tooth loss. Twice-daily brushing and daily flossing can prevent many cases of serious periodontal disease.

10 Symptoms of Gum Disease

The most common signs and symptoms of gingivitis or periodontitis include the following:

  1. Red or purple gums
  2. Swollen gums
  3. Bleeding gums
  4. Gum sensitivity or tenderness
  5. Receding gums
  6. New spaces between teeth
  7. Presence of pus between teeth and gums
  8. Bad breath or unpleasant taste in mouth
  9. Loose teeth
  10. Changes in bite

Common Causes of Gum Disease

Periodontal disease begins when bacteria-laden plaque forms on the surface of teeth. Although brushing and flossing removes plaque, it re-forms within 24 hours. If it stays on your teeth for more than two or three days, it hardens into tartar, which requires professional removal. The bacterial toxins in plaque and tartar irritate and inflame gum tissues. Eventually, deep pockets form between your teeth and gums, and these fill with bacteria, plaque, and tartar. As the infection advances under your gums, tissue and bone loss occurs. Although poor oral hygiene causes most cases of gum disease, other risk factors include smoking, hormonal changes in women, diabetes, depressed immune function, medications that reduce the flow of saliva, and genetic susceptibility.

Protect Your Teeth from Periodontal Disease

The long-term consequences of untreated periodontitis include early tooth loss and increased risk of serious medical problems like cardiovascular disease. To prevent them, practice consistent oral hygiene, visit your dentist regularly, and make an appointment immediately if your gums appear puffy and red, or bleed when you brush your teeth.
