The Causes of Dental Anxiety and Dentist Phobia

Dental anxiety is a fear of the dentist that may cause you to avoid getting the professional care you need to keep your healthy smile. Dentist phobia is an even more serious condition characterized by severe anxiety and panic at the thought of seeing a dentist. With either condition, you could suffer gum disease, pain, or even tooth loss because of your reluctance to seek help. You’re not alone; about 80 percent of American adults experience some type of dental anxiety. Women and children are more commonly affected, but the problem can strike anyone.

The Causes of Dental Anxiety and Dentist Phobia

Dental fear often starts in childhood after a negative experience, but a recent study conducted by Delta Dental in conjunction with National Anxiety Month in April showed that parents who are afraid of the dentist might unconsciously pass their dental anxiety along to their kids. Among participants, the number of parents who were afraid of the dentist closely matched the number of kids with the same feelings. If you have children, you can avoid instilling fear by addressing your own anxiety and focusing on positive aspects of dental care when discussing it with your kids. Precipitating factors associated with fear of the dentist include feelings of helplessness, post-traumatic stress disorder, fear of needles, financial concerns, embarrassment about oral conditions, and past abuse.

Strategies for Beating Your Fear of the Dentist

  • Find a dentist who specializes in treating anxious patients.
  • Explain your fear to your dentist, and request detailed explanations of treatments and procedures.
  • Before your dental appointment, avoid caffeine and sugar, which may contribute to nervousness.
  • Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or guided imagery.
  • Agree on a hand signal to alert your dentist when you’re feeling overwhelmed during treatment.
  • Utilize in-office distractions like televisions, or bring along your own media devices.
  • Seek professional counseling for your dental anxiety problem.

Sedation for Dentist Phobia

Various forms of sedation dentistry are used to help prevent and relieve dental anxiety symptoms in adults. The following are common types of sedation used.

  • Oral sedation in the form of pills or tablets
  • Inhaled sedation (nitrous oxide)
  • Intravenous (IV) sedation
  • General anesthesia
