Enlightening Tips for Avoiding Tooth Discoloration

Have you noticed dark stains on your teeth? Discover what’s causing this darkness and see the light on ways to avoid it.

Sauce can Cause Stained Teeth

Dark-colored sauces, such as tomato and soy sauce may taste very good, but they’re very bad for your teeth. Choose lighter shades of sauces and brush your teeth after meals to decrease your chance of stains.

Berries Bring on Tooth Discoloration

Blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, pomegranates, cherries, and other dark fruits and juices leave your teeth ripe for stains. Not surprisingly, lighter fruits have much less staining potential. But since many of these fruits are very high in antioxidants, you can continue to eat them in moderation, but you should rinse your mouth afterward to decrease their staining power.

Tea Brews up Tooth Discoloration

While it’s commonly known that coffee can darken teeth, you may be surprised to learn that tea can cause more staining. And even herbal and white teas can actually erode your tooth enamel, which leads to later stains.

Colas and Carbonated Drinks Open you up to Stains

It’s time to say so long to sodas and carbonated drinks because they’re some of the leading causes of the discoloration of teeth. See, these fizzy drinks contain acids and dyes that can cause significant staining.

Run Away from Sports Drinks

Sports and energy drinks may help support your workout, but they also support stained teeth. These drinks are high in acids that wear away your tooth enamel and increase your chance of stains. It’s wiser to drink water during a workout.

Wine and White Teeth Don’t Mix

Be aware that any food or drink that can stain a white fabric can do the same to your teeth. As a result, red wine’s deep, dark hue and very acidic nature are direct red flags that it will cause discoloration of teeth. While white wine is lighter in color, it’s even higher in acid, which can do damage to tooth enamel and put you at risk for stains.

Lighten up your Intake

Since it can be hard to give up all of these favorite foods and drinks, at least try to lessen your intake so you can decrease your chance of stains. And when you do have darker drinks, be sure to sip them through a straw to avoid their contact with teeth. Finally, when you do consume any dark-hued foods, either rinse your mouth or brush your teeth as soon as you’ve finished enjoying them. Although you should wait an hour after consuming highly acidic foods and drinks before brushing so you don’t damage your teeth’s enamel.
